This is NOT the latest Bullsheet! If you want the latest, go here. |
Members of the Blackheath and District Horticultural Society visited this farm on 18th June. | |
![]() Mary, the proprietor, extols the virtues of herbs while Society President Walter Hitchell OAM looks interested. | ![]() These yellow flowers had some herbal virtue but I forget what it was. They're pretty anyway. |
![]() I suspect that these flowers were just for decoration but I'm not sure - anyone who knows what esoteric herbal powers they have are welcome to email the webmaster. | ![]() Of course they sell stuff. This is the shop. |
This document was written by Edwina Harvey and rendered into html by Ted Scribner (I also check all web references - Ted).
In the interests of getting the new email Bullsheet up on the website as soon as possible, I'll put the largely untouched email version up first, then gradually add and edit the html.
This version is the third draft. Some news may be posted over the course of the month - this will be in the "Late Breaking News" box.
If you want something changed please write to me, krenon at y7mail.com or krenon at celestialcobbler.com
So as not to feed web crawlers with email addresses for spam, I've made all email addresses [name] at [address]. To use them, replace " at " with "@".
For (I hope) your convenience, all the url links are set so as to open an extra web page, while leaving the Bullsheet page as it is. When you've finished looking at the link, close it, don't try to go back.

Daniel Lovecraft to act as contact point Next meeting: 2 pm, 30 August, Summer Hill Community Centre, 131 Smith St, Summer Hill. Charles N. Brown, 1937-2009 - posted at 7/13/2009 09:46:00 AM PT Locus publisher, editor, and co-founder Charles N. Brown, 72, died peacefully in his sleep July 12, 2009 on his way home from Readercon. http//www.locusmag.com/News/2009/07/charles-n-brown-1937-2009.html. Charles Nikki Brown was born June 24, 1937 in Brooklyn NY, where he grew up. He attended the City College of New York, taking time off from 1956-59 to serve in the US Navy, and finished his degree (BS in physics and engineering) at night on the GI Bill while working as a junior engineer in the '60s. He married twice, to Marsha Elkin (1962-69), who helped him start Locus, and to Dena Benatan (1970-77), who co-edited Locus for many years while he worked full time. He moved to San Francisco in 1972, working as a nuclear engineer until becoming a full-time SF editor in 1975. The Locus offices have been in Brown's home in the Oakland hills since 1973. Brown co-founded Locus with Ed Meskys and Dave Vanderwerf as a one-sheet news fanzine in 1968, originally created to help the Boston Science Fiction Group win its Worldcon bid. Brown enjoyed editing Locus so much that he continued the magazine far beyond its original planned one-year run. Locus was nominated for its first Hugo Award in 1970, and Brown was a best fan writer nominee the same year. Locus won the first of its 29 Hugos in 1971. During Brown's long and illustrious career he was the first book reviewer for Asimov's; wrote the Best of the Year summary for Terry Carr's annual anthologies (1975-87); wrote numerous magazines and newspapers; edited several SF anthologies; appeared on countless convention panels; was a frequent Guest of Honor, speaker, and judge at writers' seminars; and has been a jury member for various major SF awards. As per his wishes, Locus will continue to publish, with executive editor Liza Groen Trombi taking over as editor-in-chief with the August 2009 issue. Coraline – a fairy-tale nightmare steeped in classic storytelling, craftsmanship and moviemaking magic. Official release date 6 August 2009 |

BULLSHEET EDITOR's DUMMY SPIT: You've probably noticed I frequently, though unintentionally, make mistakes when composing this publication. Fortunately the greater majority of our readers and submitters are polite, tolerant, and forgiving when informing me that I've got something wrong. However, in the past month I've had an exchange that was anything but polite or courteous. I'd just like to remind people that though we're called "The Bullsheet", we're not here to be bullied, and providing a fannish service doesn't mean we're to be treated like servants, particularly when your own organization can't get its house in order. - Edwina.

HATCH, MATCH & DISPATCH
DEATHS:
DAVID EDDINGS, American best-selling fantasy author of The Bellgariad series and spin-offs, The Elenium series and The Dreamer series among many other titles, passed away on 2rd June, aged 77.
LAURA MOLESWORTH, widow of Voltaire (Vol) Molesworth who wrote "A History of Australian Science Fiction Fandom, 1935-1963", passed away on 6th June. Laura served as the Futurian Society of Sydney's librarian, and helped organize some of the earliest natcons held in Sydney. Laura was also a member of "the femme fan group" that produced the fanzine "Vertical Horizons" in the early 1950's. (Reported by Graham Stone, relayed by Chris Nelson.)
CATHY GOODWIN, fan and fanwriter of UFO, Blake's 7, The Bill, and The X-files stories, fan dealer at Parramatta Collectors Fair, Granville Swap Meets, Friends of Science Fiction meetings and conventions passed away on 7th June aged 54, having suffered a severe heart-attack earlier in the week. As it was Cathy's wish to donate her body to science on her death, there was no funeral service. Because of this, several of us who knew Cathy have written our memories here as a form of unity and farewell.
Cathy Lynn Goodwin, 1954-2009 - a Tribute
Cathy charged at life like a bull at a gate. – Anne Devrell.
Cathy was recycling paper before it became fashionable to do so. All of her first drafts were typed onto drafts of earlier stories. It took me a while to cotton onto this because I once dropped a lengthy article held together by a paper clip, and it ended up going together with several pages back to front!
Cathy's work needed constructional editing on the odd occasion, and we'd have sometimes lengthy and illuminating conversations over the vulgarities of the English language. This didn't apply to the content as one could be sure Cathy had researched the subject thoroughly. She spent many hours in the State Library searching for information on Jeremy Brett when we were working on a Sherlock Holmes zine, and that's just one example of her attention to detail. The Met in London received a lengthy letter requesting uniform and rank details before Cathy started on her first piece of "Bill" fiction. When she met "Bill" actors Colin Tarrant and Simon Rouse she soon had them discussing their characters. Likewise, I believe "X-Files" star Gillian Anderson was impressed by Cathy's awesome knowledge of FBI procedures.
It's funny what you first recall of close friends who have departed this life. Like many other local SF fans, we had "Blake's 7" to thank for putting us in contact. We were both readers of the Aussie "Blake's 7" fanzine "Rumours". I Either the editor or Narrelle [Harris] sent me a mailing list of other fans which included Cathy. We probably corresponded for a time but it was the arrival of Yvon [Hintz], which saw us meet at Strathfield Station [Sydney, NSW]. Yvon who'd come by bus [she was then living in Katherine, NT] left the station on the wrong side, so we had time to talk and realise we shared similar interests before Yvon finally found us!
Cathy's dream or as she termed "her pipe dream" was to be a television scriptwriter. She may not have achieved that long-held ambition though I'm sure she had the ability. The proof of that was the collection of articles, reference guides and TV tie-in fanfic she produced over a 20-year period. A desire for perfection saw Cathy working on stories and articles even after they had appeared in print, if only for her own satisfaction.
Finally, for this small tribute anyway, I come to Cathy herself. She could, like all of us, be stubborn and bloody-minded if, in her opinion, the occasion called for it! She was also loyal, generous and the most brutally honest person I've known. I remember Cathy as a true friend who will always live in my heart and mind, so here's to you, Cathy, until we meet again. - John Tipper
Cathy Goodwin was generous to a fault. Her sense of humour and use of bad puns rivalled my own. She appeared cavalier and could tease and taunt you as if you were family. We were hucksters together; I guess that made us "sisters under the skin" I'd seen her name in zines on UFO, Blake's 7, and The Bill, before I met Cathy at the Granville Swap meets. I have fond memories of Cathy, Mike McGann and I driving to and from a Melbourne con, my car packed with all our wares (even on the way home, because none of us sold much at the con), trying to sing every Beatles song. Cathy and I shared a table at the Parramatta Collectors Fair for a couple of years when The X-files was at its prime. I think she was tickled by the celebrity status shown her by other fans because she'd met Gillian Anderson, had encyclopaedic knowledge of the show, and had "starred" on a TV show about collectors. An excellent writer and researcher, she could have been a good genre writer, but dismissed the idea. In life, and I suspect in death, Cathy knew precisely what she wanted and went for it. Cathy was diabetic, and though it's called FOLCC, we'll continue to raise funds to donate to JDRFA in Cathy's memory as well as Linda's. - Edwina
I met Cathy Lynn Goodwin (by correspondence) in the early 1980s when she was involved in writing fan fiction (she even dabbled in artwork too). I remember Cathy as someone who knew her material well, and she was always gentle and encouraging in her assessment of others' work. In person at a convention in the early 1990s, Cathy was friendly and happy to "ham it up" with fellow SF fans. Although I lost contact with her in recent years, I feel her loss as that of a "kindred spirit" in fandom. Geoff Allshorn
GLAYNE LOUISE-BLACKMORE, former wife of Leigh Blackmore, died from complications relating to toxic reaction to a medication on Monday 22 June. A passionate fantasy and SF fan with Terry Pratchett, Angela Carter and Camille Paglia among her favourite authors, Glayne started her bookselling career with Abbeys Bookshop in Sydney before moving to Dymocks where as joint-manager she helped Leigh run the specialist SF department at Dymocks, George St from 1995 to 2000. Glayne also helped run many author signings, and edit and produce `Mythopoeia", the store SF newsletter, during that time. Glayne later worked at Object Galleries and Trimex. Her sense of humour and enthusiasn for speculative fiction will be missed. (Our sympathies to Leigh and his family at this sad time, Edwina & Ted)
MAVIS SMITH, mother of Susan Batho, Chris Smith & Karen Auhl, passed away on 28th June. Mavis, along with husband, Harry, (deceased) was quite active in fandom helping her daughter, Susan (then Sue Clarke) run NSW Star Trek fanclub, ASTREX' s publications, meetings and events. She was also a committee member/helper for the MEDTREK & ECCENTRICON conventions held in NSW from 1984- 1991. Her funeral will be on Thursday, 2nd July at 12 noon, at the Rose Chapel, Palmdale, Ourimbah. And afterwards at 24 Emu Drive, San Remo.
